The Corvette Grand Sport Spotted on the Road
Well, it’s not a sure thing exactly, but Autoblog.com has caught something that very well could be the next production version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray out on the road. There aren’t a whole lot of seventh-generation Corvettes out there in the world at this point, and Chevy has released basically no info on higher level models like the Grand Sport, which would hypothetically come equipped with a stiffer race-tuned suspension, summer tires, and perhaps a few other performance options to make it track ready.
The spy shots show a bright, taxi-yellow Corvette with silver racing stripes. The funny thing about the silver racing stripes? Chevrolet doesn’t make a Corvette with racing stripes. Even though they provide custom color options when ordering a new 2014 Corvette, nothing but solid colors are available. That means that this is likely a pre-production model.
The second funny thing about this Corvette, which was spotted in snowy Michigan, is the complete lack of badges. An enterprising (and crazy!) owner of a new Corvette potentially could have pulled off the stingray badges that generally adorn the fenders just behind the side-vents, but why? We think it’s more likely that this might be a prototype caught testing in the wild hiding in plain site.
The third thing that Autoblog.com reporters noticed was a full car cover. Chevrolet usually throws a car cover into prototypes just in case they need to be parked outside. With body work that’s essentially identical to the new Stingray, a Grand Sport can effectively pass as another production model, or so the thinking of Chevy testers might go, but if they needed to park the car it would be worth covering up just to hide the special equipment that might be hiding under the hood or in the cabin.
Finally, maybe the most distinctive evidence that this is a prototype is that it’s driving around in Michigan in the snow. What new Corvette owner would go to the trouble of getting a custom paint job and then take it for a joy ride on the icy Midwestern roads!
