What is the Chevy Volt’s MPG?
In short, the Chevy’s Volt’s fuel economy is one of the absolute best, and not only in its class, but in the whole market. The Volt’s combination electric/gasoline powered drivetrain is helping drivers save in fuel costs everyday. This unique set-up, though, makes breaking it down into conventional fuel economy terms more difficult.
Regardless of the type of vehicle you drive, hybrid or not, your overall fuel economy largely depends on your overall driving style. Drivers who spend most of their time in city stop and go traffic won’t get as strong of an average fuel economy as drivers who spend most of their time on the open highway. We can break it down even further, though. Drivers who stay at or below the speed limit save more fuel than those who go over.
The same goes for the Chevy Volt. The battery can carry the Volt anywhere from 25 to 50 miles depending on your driving style. Once the battery runs out, the gasoline engine seamlessly kicks in. Since many drivers travel less than 40 miles a day, the battery power is more than enough to carry them through their commute. Many Volt owners go weeks without their gas engine kicking in. As a safety measure, the Volt runs a regular engine cycle to prevent things from getting stiff.
Here’s the kicker. Charging your car in the garage is cheaper than filling it up at the pump. Why? A dollar’s worth of electrical power will carry you much farther than a dollar’s worth of gasoline.
The word “electric vehicle” makes some people nervous, though. They fear both the hassle of having to wait for it to charge as well as being stranded far from home with an empty battery. Drivers with the 240V charging station can fill their Volts in about three hours. The gasoline engine removes your fear of being up a creek without a charger, making the Volt both economical and practical.
